Posing tips for models and photographers in Commercial Photography situations

Way back when I was in art school, I learned about compositional shapes and how those shapes applied to posing models. After that, I had a photographer friend that used to shoot a lot of models (dancers, and don’t ask me what kind…) and always prided himself in pointing out the different letters created by the model’s posses.



He would say something like “that’s a perfect S composition” or “look at that C shape created by the model’s arms.”  I didn’t really see the significance in all these letters, but I’ll pass this along to you anyways.  To me, it doesn’t matter the shape the model’s pose creates, it just matters that it’s interesting.  I’ve seen some interesting posses, that worked just fine, that couldn’t be translated into any specific letter’s shape.  Not without a lot of imagination or alcohol, or both…  As long as the composition is interesting, the letter it forms isn’t important.  I’ll probably burn in “Art School Hell” for that statement…
